As yet another case of Hoare’s outreach beyond his own contributions, he was a key figure in the IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing) Working Group 2.3 on programming methodology. Upon its rejection by the group, a number of dissenters including Wirth, Dijkstra and Hoare created a splinter group, 2.3, devoted to programming methodology, which has now held 71 meetings since the first one in Oslo in 1969!. Hoare was a stalwart of WG 2.3 since its beginning, attending its meetings until recently, that is to say, for over a half-century; WG2.3 was another venue in which he exerted influence on and provided advice to several generations of researchers.
